Carnival 2006

Carnival in Malta is different to the fifth season in Germany, and it is also not the same as the traditional Venician Carnival. Besides this it is also far away from the Carnival in Rio. However, the Maltese Carnival is a mix of all and more.

The grand parade of floats whch I was able to experience with the crowd found its way through the narrow streets of Valletta on Sunday, 26th February 2006.

The floats are all hand made showing different images of different categories, such as political for example.

The major initiators are families who take care of the design and manufacturing of the floats, but also about the choreography of the related dance groups accompanying.

People, especially the kids, dress up in nice costumes and go with the stream or watch the fracases from a static point. This year Valletta was full of little Spidermen, Batmen, Supermen, princesses and fairies, but also Egyptian Sphinxes, knights and clowns.

Also a delegation from the Venician Carnival was seen, however their origin may not be Venice, but Naxxar, Hamrun, Qormi or Siggiewi.

Dance groups and band clubs also performed for the joy of the thousands of carnival fans, were they carnival fanatics, families enjoying the spirit of carnival or just tourists who happened to be there on that day.
